Ways to Beat Doggy Boredom

Did you know that many of Fido’s bad habits can be attributed at least in part to boredom? Our canine pals are both smart and playful, and can get a bit restless with nothing to do. If your pup isn’t getting enough activity and stimulation, he may amuse himself by acting up. Read on for some great tips from a local Lafayette, LA veterinarian on keeping your pet entertained… and out of mischief.

Playtime

Take time to play with your furry best friend every day. This will be beneficial in many ways. For one thing, this will help your pooch burn off his excess energy. If Fido wears himself out running after a toy, he’ll probably be ready to nap after playtime is over. This can be very useful in curbing bad doggy behaviors! Playing is also just plain fun for dogs.

Toys

Toys are absolutely crucial when it comes to keeping your pup entertained. Offer Fido a variety of playthings. Include some that he can use alone, as well as some that are good for interactive play. Puzzle toys and treat toys can be very helpful here, as they can keep frisky pooches occupied for hours. If you are working with a tight budget, look online for DIY ideas. Also, be sure to rotate your dog’s toys out regularly, so he doesn’t get bored with them.

Training

Many of our canine companions actually enjoy learning new things. If Fido has already mastered the basics, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, show him some cute tricks. Roll Over is always adorable! You can also move on to advanced training.

Adventures

Dogs love exploring new places. Change your canine buddy’s walking routes up regularly, so he can enjoy changes of scenery. You can also take Fido to a park, or explore a pretty trail with him. The fresh air and exercise will be good for both of you!

Stimulation

Fido can’t spend all of his time playing, but that doesn’t mean he has to stare at the walls all day. If possible, give him access to a window, so he can look outside and watch birds and squirrels. Leaving a TV or radio on for your pet can also be helpful.
