Respect Your Cat Day

March 28th is Respect Your Cat Day! You may very well have heard the saying about how cats have never forgotten the fact that they were considered gods in ancient Egypt. Fluffy certainly does have a way of looking very smug and self-satisfied with herself! But how do you keep your feline overlord purring? While there’s certainly nothing wrong with showering Fluffy with toys, treats, and affection, it’s also important to understand your furry pal’s emotions and needs. Read on as a local Lafayette, LA vet discusses how to respect a cat.

Clean Facilities

Make sure to keep your cat’s litterbox clean. Kitties hate dirty bathrooms! We recommend scooping your pet’s powder room daily, and changing the litter about once a week.

Veterinary Care

Many of our feline patients don’t see us as often as they should. While cats are fairly independent, they still need proper care in order to stay happy and healthy. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. In between visits, keep up with your cat’s parasite control, and watch for signs of illness, such as vomiting, unkempt fur, and behavioral changes. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Avoid Punishment

Fluffy is very cute, but she isn’t purrfect. However, if your cat does something wrong, such as scratching appropriately, don’t punish her. This may just scare her. Instead, ask your vet for advice on teaching your furball better petiquette.

Toys/Entertainment

Make sure your feline pal has plenty of fun toys to smack around, and take time to play with her regularly. Fluffy will also appreciate a good window view.

Safe, Comfy Environment

It isn’t hard to turn your home into a kitty paradise. Offer your furball some vertical space, such as a cat tower, so she can get a better view of her kingdom. Cats also like to explore nooks and crannies, so offer Fluffy a pet tent or tipi, or perhaps a cat tunnel. Boxes will also please your furry overlord!

Keeping Kitty Purring

Cats need to feel loved, safe, and perhaps a bit spoiled to truly thrive. Good food and soft beds will help keep your kitty happy and healthy. It’s also important to pay attention to Fluffy, so she doesn’t feel lonely or ignored.
