Training
Before bringing Fido to the beach, make sure he knows basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This can help keep your pet from running off, or approaching dangerous areas.
Swimming
Some of our canine buddies love to swim! The ocean can be very dangerous for Man’s Best Friend, however. Currents, riptides, and wakes can all threaten your beloved pet. Keep a close eye on Fido when he’s in the water, and never leave him unattended.
Heat
Louisiana summers can be scorchers! Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks for our canine pals. Watch for signs of overheating, such as heavy panting, drooling, trembling, and lethargy. If you think your furry friend may be too hot, immediately give him some water, bring him to a cool, indoor area, and call your vet.
Water
Don’t forget to bring water for Fido! Look for collapsible plastic dishes: these are easy to fit in your beach bag!
Paw Care
Dogs can get painful paw blisters by running around on hot tar or sand. Fido’s furry feet will be particularly delicate after he’s been swimming. Use paw balm or wax to protect your canine buddy’s paws, and check for cuts or injuries before heading home.
Sunscreen
Dogs can get sunburns, just like people! Ask your vet for recommendations about using sunscreen on your canine friend.
Courtesy
Don’t leave a mess on the beach. Always bring waste baggies to pick up after your pooch.
Fur
Before you head home, rinse the salt and sand out of Fido’s fur. If your dog has long hair, you may want to give him a brushing that night, once he’s dried off.
Treat!
As the day winds down, indulge your pooch in a cool summer treat, like doggy ice cream. Tail wags and summer sunsets are a beautiful combination!
